What are Stiletto Shoes?

‘Ultra thin shoes with ultra thin heels’, is what our ultra trendy stiletto shoes can best be defined as. The popular shoe derives its name from ‘Stiletto Dagger’ which is endowed with a murderous long slender blade. Aptly named, stiletto shoes are no less dangerous than their namesake with the length of their heels typically varying from 4 inches to 8 inches or more!

Stiletto shoes are sometimes also defined as shoes with heels having a diameter at the ground of less than 1 cm (slightly less than half an inch). Stiletto-style heels shorter than 5 cm are called kitten heels.

Stiletto shoes became popular in 1950s when a thin metal rod was placed within the heel to make it strong enough to support the weight of a person. Today, stiletto heels have become extremely popular and are found in various types of shoes and boots such as sling-backs, pumps, mules, ankle boots etc. Stiletto shoes have become on and off ageing fashion accessories several times since then. The slender stiletto heels however, staged a major comeback after 2000, when young women adopted the style for dressing up office wear or adding a feminine touch to casual wear like jeans.

Nowadays stiletto shoes are highly popular. While the kitten heel versions have become an everyday office and party wear, higher heel versions are associated with the image of femme fatale and are known more their erotic nature than for their ability to make height.

what do the colors red and yellow mean on a thyroid ultrasound test?

My step mother went for an ultra sound the other day because her thyroid was puffy. She is already on medication for her thyriod (I think it's over active). Anyway, she is still waiting for results back but on the screen she saw the colors red and yellow and she is really scared. I think it was because she thinks red means something bad. Does anyone know what these colors mean on an ultra sound? I would ask the Dr. but we cant contact him until Monday so if anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. ~Lindsay

Normal ultrascan images will be in shades of grey....blacks and whites. There are no colors. When we use a color feature, it is looking at blood flow. She should have seen shades of blues and reds. Every body part should have blood flow within it. We always take a few pictures of each lobe of the thyroid with the color feature.

"Dynamic information such as blood flow can be added to the signal by employing a physics principle called the Doppler effect. The Doppler signals, which are superimposed on real time gray scale images, are extremely bright in black and white images and may be color coded to reveal the velocity (frequency shift) and direction of blood flow (phase shift) as well as the degree of vascularity of an organ. [6,7] Flow in one direction is made red and in the opposite direction, blue. The shade and intensity of color can correlate with the velocity of flow. Thus, in general terms, venous and arterial flow can be depicted by assuming that flow in these two kinds of blood vessels is parallel, but in opposite directions. Since portions of blood vessels may be tortuous, modifying orientation to the probe, different colors are displayed within the same vessel even if the true direction of blood flow in that vessel has not changed. Thus, an analysis of flow characteristics requires careful observations and cautious interpretations. The absence of flow in a fluid-filled structure can differentiate a cystic structure and a blood vessel."
