Gas water heater making a bubbling noise?
I have a gas water heater that is 10 years old and when the water is running there is a loud noise that is like air bubbling in the middle of the tank. What are the possibilities causing this sound?
Wow, quite a variety of WRONG answers. Only one is correct, it's a build up of lime, calcium sediment in the bottom of the tank. Over the years, this stuff builds up in the bottom of the tank and when the gas burner hits the bottom of the tank and heats it up, it makes the small pieces of lime actually explode like popcorn, only underwater. These explosions don't really hurt anything, but they can be annoying if you can hear them from the living area of your home. Also, if it builds up enough, it cuts down on the available water to be heated and can make a shower shorter than it should be. It may be time for a new heater. Unfortunately, there's no effective way to drain or clean this stuff out of a gas unit, other than buying a self clean model. They're more expensive initially, but they'll extend the useful life several years.
