" How does the mass of a matchbox car affect it's velocity?" Help what is the control and experimental setup?

I need to know the control and experimental setup so that I can take pictures with them. I'm not sure what they are in this project, Please HELP!

A control group is the test sample used to find results without whatever change you would be testing in the experimental group.

For example, when testing medicines, the control group gets a placebo (phony pill) and the experimental group gets the real pills being tested. After some time, the control group and experimental group results are statistically examined to see if there is a significant difference between the two groups. Of course the hope is that the experimental group will be much healthier than the control group showing the pill worked.

In your case, without knowing the particulars of what your test goal might be, I'm guessing your control group would be matchbox cars straight out of the box... without alteration. And your experimental group would be a set of altered matchbox cars (with additional weight?).

Specify your hypothesis is a testable way. For example, "matchbox cars with 10 gm of mass added to them will coast farther off the bottom of a ramp than the out of box matchbox cars." Now you set out to show your hypothesis (your guess) is a good one or not by running tests.

Then take one unaltered matchbox car and let it roll down a ramp with a fixed slope. Measure how far out it rolls from the bottom of the ramp. Start the car rolling from the same spot on the ramp and let it start from a complete stop. Do this, say, 30 times, measuring the distance rolled each time. Average the rollout distance for the thirty or whatever you use tests.

Now add the weight (mass) to the same car. Let it roll 30 times and measure the rollout distance. Find this experimental group average and compare it with the control group average. As the distance of roll out from the bottom of the ramp is proportional to the square of the velocity at the bottom of the ramp, the longer average distance will indicate the greater average velocity.

Take pictures of the ramp, a car rolling down the ramp, a car with and without the 10 gm mass added, and some rollout distances with a measuring tape to show the distance.

[Note... you might very well find no real difference in the rollout distances (and therefore velocities) between the two groups. In fact, if your ramp, car, and rollout area are virtually frictionless, physics can show there will be no difference. Only if there is friction in you test system will there be a difference.]
