2011 Subaru Forester S Edition

An exciting Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Subaru Forester concept with some strong clues pointing to a new variant next year has been unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. The  Subaru Forester S-Edition concept, making its worldwide debut in Sydney, builds on the turbocharged following of the existing Forester XT.

Subaru Forester S-Edition's turbocharged 2.5 liter 193 Kilowatt engine is 24 kW more powerful than the XT and produces 347 Newtonmetres of torque, up 27 Nm.

Other significant additions include:

- Paddleshift five-speed automatic gearbox
- Revised sports suspension

Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive
- Exclusive styling accents
- STI 17-inch high lustre alloy wheels
- Alcantara seat trim with S-Edition logos
- Drilled alloy pedals
- Luminescent instruments with centre design unique to the model

    Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: "We're delighted and honoured that Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) have chosen Sydney for the worldwide unveil of this Forester concept.

"It points towards an exciting development in our Forester range early next year.

"Forester is firmly established as Australia's best selling compact sports utility vehicle, with the most recent addition to the range being the diesel variants that are proving a sales winner for our All-Wheel Drive brand.

"There's no denying Forester's appeal to Australians in both urban and rural environments, so we think this concept will only add to the huge interest," added Mr Senior.

Today's unveil follows FHI's recent announcement of its first all-new new engine in 21 years, which will debut on normally aspirated Foresters in Australia in early 2011.

The third-generation four cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer engine will launch as a 2.5 litre in Australia.

It features a longer stroke, compact combustion chamber and lighter moving parts.

Forester remains Australia's best-selling compact sports utility vehicle year-to-date, with recently launched diesel variants drawing even more customers to the multi-award-winning model.

Since going on the market in June, diesel variants have represented 29 per cent of Forester sales.

Along with every vehicle in the Subaru range, Forester has an independent five-star rating for occupant safety from the respected Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and is protected by DataDot security

i want to replace a gas motor with an electric one?

Is there a variable speed electric motor with enough horse power and torque that would run on 110 volts to put in a small car in place of the engine? I was thinking of using a generator to power it. This would change mpg to hours per gallon if the electric motor wasn't too expensive. It would be easy to mount to a standard transmission.

You vary the speed of a DC motor by varying the voltage applied and you vary the speed of an AC motor by varying the frequency of the AC power. Electric motors are rated by steady state HP while gas engines are rated by peak horse power so you only need a third the rating of the gas engine. Electric motors develop torque almost immediately while gas engines only have decent torque at higher rev's so an electric motor will provide superior torque characteristics. As to using a generator to produce the electricity for the electric motor, this is called a series hybrid and does give you a benefit in that the internal combustion engine only needs to be sized for your average power requirements and the batteries or capacitors can bank what's needed for the bursts of acceleration as well as allow for regenerative braking. It would actually be easier to do a parallel hybrid where both the internal combustion engine drive and the electric motor deliver their energy directly to the road, simplifies the construction and control systems immensely plus gives you the redundancy of two complete drive systems should one fail. Take a look at the XR3 plugin Hybrid plans for inspiration. At the very least, the idea of using a commercial diesel engine as the internal combustion engine will give you far more efficiency than a gasoline engine.

You'll probably want to get a lot of scrap metal and a MIG welder so that you can practice welding. The tough part will be mounting the motor and the batteries as neither will fit the mount bolts that the gasoline engine used to sit on. The electric motor will be much smaller and lighter than the gasoline engine so you can weld up a crate that mounts to the original engine mounts and has adjustable brakets to mount the electric motor at the appropriate position and angle required to mate with the transmission and the crate can also support brackets to hold batteries. This way the weight would be supported by the original mounting bolts rather than be metal brackets welded to the frame. Good for vibration, weight balance and to avoid metal fatique. A lot of measuring and a little bit of draftsmanship will go a long ways. Also look for custom kits that have already been made for your donor car, that saves a lot of time and effort in rigging up mounting brackets and wiring harnesses.

You can base the design of the crate on the original motor and this would be a lot easier if you can get blueprints for your original motor.
