Tensile Strength of Various Polymers is Important in Manifold Design
As plastics become more and more the material of choice for machined plastic manifold blocks, tensile strength becomes a very important mechanical property design criteria. Plumbing and component connections, typically utilize a threaded attachment mechanism. This attachment can result in high tensile stress on the plastic manifold block and result in the failure of what could be a very expensive precision machined plastic component. We have seen these results when the wrong material is used in the design.
Acrylic offers a cost effective plastic with high clarity after machining and polishing. This makes it desirable for manifold applications. However other plastics offer significantly higher tensile strength properties, good clarity after machining and polishing and are far less brittle than Acrylic. See chart below. These materials should be considered along with full design parameters when selecting a material.

The laboratory and diagnostic instrumentation market constantly demands smaller, more compact equipment. Bonded multilayer fluidic manifolds can be a good choice to achieve the packaging size reduction that is the preferred design. A multilayer manifold is frequently a single manifold replacing the traditional tubing connections between multiple manifolds. The layers allow vertical integration and encapsulation of the connections between various components such as pumps and valves. What problems with failure of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Passages in the intake manifold in a tracker
Niki's answer is mostly correct, with the exception of "data flow to the ecm (or pcm, whichever you have). The "data flow" she is referring to is actually a 5V reference feedback from the EGR's pintle, which the ECM uses to calculate positioning and performance of the valve, no data is sent between the ecm & egr. If the passages to the EGR become restricted, nothing will happen except a service engine lamp. If the EGR valve gets stuck open, the the engine will be sluggish and hesitate, even stall out at times. Have the passages cleaned at a dealership. If the valve is sticking open, or if there is a restriction- your emissions will likely fail depending on the state you live in.
