so im thinking about running 100 ultrabright white 3.3V leds at 20ma each in parralel, im using a +5v source. The problem is resistor calculators keep telling me to use a 1 ohm resistor. that seems to low. what resistor should i use? and also i only want to use one resistor so what wattage do you think it should be? i was thinking 1 hundred ohm five watt resistor? also if i use that will it get vey hot?
any help would be appretiated
It is not a good idea to connect l.e.ds in parallel - unless you give each one its own series resistor.
The actual Vf (forward voltage) will be slightly different for each of them. The published figures give typical and maximum values and sometimes minimum values.
With l.e.ds in parallel sharing a resistor, the l.e.d with the lowest Vf will pass more current than the others. This can, and often will, cause that l.e.d to fail quickly unless your calculations take minimum and maximum values into account.
You really should provide every l.e.d. with its own resistor and wire the 100 series combinations in parallel.
The value of a suitable resistor can be calculated by subtracting the published Vf min from 5V then dividing the result by 0.02.
For example, if the minimum Vf for your type of l.e.d. is 3.2,
5 - 3.2 = 1.8
1.8 รท 0.02 = 90
The series resistor should be 90 ohms. The nearest value you can buy is 91 ohms, which is fine.
The power developed in 91 ohms at 20mA is 36mW. With 100 of them, that's a total of 3.6W
Total power dissipated in the 100 l.e.ds is 6.4W
