Transformers: Electrical devices enhancing efficiency

A day without electricity is hard to imagine. Just think what would be the scenario if there would have been no tube light, no fan, no fax or no power for operating computer? The day will not be streamlined. Subtracting electricity from daily lives will swipe us to ancient era. Isn't this ridiculous? Yes of course it is. Technology has left huge impact on us and also gave us the privilege to lead a life with seasoning of pace.

Mobile areas like mountainous regions, forests, villages have no powers which can illuminate bulb or fan. Electric energy is made to travel to such places with wires. Transformer is invention of the intelligent mind which is used to enhance the voltage before transporting the electric power to long distances with use of wires. Wires spread electric energy more than the amount of current flowing through the wire. Transferring of electric current to high voltage leads to the transmission of power. One of the excellent benefits of transformers is affordable way to transmit power to far way distances.

Transformers or electrical devices have housed many electronic products to step down the fed voltage which is sync with the low voltage circuits integrated in the products. These electrical devices electrically create a bridge between the end user from and the supplied voltage.

Transformers are devices which are used for transferring electrical energies from one circuit to another via inductively coupled conductors which are basically the transformer's coils. Transformers' size varies from thumb nailed size placed inside microphone to colossal weighing hundreds of tons that are used to interconnect portions of power grids. Every single transformer functions with same principle and can be differentiated on the basis of constructions. Core is one of the few constructions of transformers. Composition of these transformers highly depends on the factors such as voltage, current and frequency. Transformer lamination provides efficient transfer of power. Majority of the transformers which are in the Navy equipment has laminated steel cores. Steel laminations are insulated with material which is non-conducting like varnish and then made into core. Transformer lamination is composed of many laminations to result into core which is just an inch thick. Losses can be minimized with these laminations.

On the other hand, toroidal cores are constructed in ring shaped which depends on the operating frequency. This one is highly efficient donut shaped core. This one is constructed using grain oriented silicon-iron is divided to form a ribbon of steel. Toroidal cores are designed with tightly wound ribbon there is virtually no air gap. This being the reason that the transformer operate at higher flux density.

Toroidal transformers have many benefits over standard laminated transformers. Quiet, excellent operation coupled with low stray magnetic fields. Compactness of toroidal core makes easy and convenient to design into numerous applications.

Can I use an air core toroidal transformer instead of ferrite?

There are no cheap ferrite toroidal cores available to me, what is the down side to just using an air core or some sort of non magnetic core? Is it just efficiency?
I want a 230V input and ~70-0-70 output about 500VA

you can but you wil need an impractical number of turns! The core does two important things: it ensures that all the flux from one coil links the other, and it makes the reluctance of the magnetic circuit small, so the magnetising inductance is very high. The higher the magnetising inductance, the lower the magnetising current. An air cored transformer for mains frequency power is completely impractical.
