Using a Soldering Iron

A soldering iron is a handy tool that can be used for many purposes. This little handy tool is used to join broken pieces of metalwork, craft, and arts and for home improvements, car repairs, engine repair, electrical equipments and more. Most commonly it is used to soldering electrical wires when working with or repairing electrical devices, switches and other things.

Are you getting ready to use soldering iron? Before you starting using it, make sure to learn the proper method to use it. You will need things like solder, flux, sponge or damp cloth, soldering stand and of course a soldering iron.

Most important thing to be kept in mind when working with soldering iron is not to touch the tip of the iron as it is extremely hot. Soldering material used for the purpose is an alloy of tin and lead and is called flux. Before you put solder over the required area, heat up the surface to be soldered by touching the tip of the hot iron. Application of the solder is called "tinning"since percentage of tin is more in the flux. However, flux can be of various types depending upon the things to be soldered.

Once the tip of soldering iron is very hot, apply the solder on the joint. Make sure that solder flows into the joint gently and turns into a volcano shape or has a peak. You have to keep one more thing in mind that is solder should flow only into the joint and not around or beside the joint.

You can judge your soldering efforts by looking at the appearance of the solder; if it looks shiny, it's a "good solder". If you think your solder is not perfect you can even fix it. You can fix a bad soldering joint by desoldering it using the desoldering braid.

You can search for a good soldering iron in your local hardware store or can obtain it online.

Help to assemble a Home Theatre System?

I am an amateur electronics buff who can just about do some effective point to point soldering of hobby circuits. Can someone kindly tell where I can find step by step instructions on piecing together a low cost, reasonably good quality Home Theatre System with 5 three way sorround sound speakers, 1 sub woofer, a dvd player and an lcd projector?

I suppose it depends on how deep you would like to go...

If you mean buying different parts: Receiver, speakers, DVD player, tv, etc... then that's one thing.

If you wan to physically build your own speakers, that's something else entirely.

Check out DIY Audio for information regarding a true "Do-It-Yourself" system with home made speakers, amplifiers, etc...

If you want great information regarding everything audio/video, look at AVS Forum.

You may want to take a look around the General Home theater & Media/Game Rooms area. Do some reading, and then ask the folks there for some guidance. They can point you into the right direction.

Good luck with your new theater.
