What happens when a synchronous motor is slipping poles?
Specifically, what is going on with the magnetic fields and torque when pole slipping occurs? What leads up to the pole slipping condition?
Also, what does it sound like? Is it terribly destructive?

The rotating magnetic field is rotating at synchronous speed based on the frequency and number of poles. In a synchronous motor, the rotor also rotates at synchronous speed because it is a big magnet. The two will be aligned..
If the motor is too heavily loaded it can cause the rotor to slow. At this point the motor torque is further reduced until the poles become re-aligned as the next rotating stator field comes around.
This can be destructive. I have witnessed this on a small (20HP) motor in a lab and it basically tries to remove itself from the base with a loud banging sound.
Sorry, I don't know of any videos which is a shame because its interesting.
