Why is a dc block used in a spectrum analyser?

In the place I work we often use a DC block at the front of the spectrum analyser.

My understanding is pretty limited. Can anyone shed some light as to how they work and why they are needed. I am currently using a 5 - 500MHz DC block.

One of the first things a spectrum analyzer does is mixes the input with a swept frequency. Most modern mixers are Gilbert Cells, so any DC would throw the bias way off and the output would be meaningless.

Here is a good tutorial from Agilent on super-het spectrum analyzers.

And i'm pretty sure that when you say " I am currently using a 5 - 500MHz DC block" you mean a bandpass filter or a balun.
