A solids state drive, also known as a solid state disk (SSD)
Information is stored on a computer in much the same way as the human mind does, hence the term "computer memory". A computer categorises the information it needs to save by using certain physical devices which are used to store it in the computer memory either permanently or temporarily. If the information is to be saved to the computers permanent memory, it is likely to be kept on the computer memory, whereas if it is to be stored temporarily, it will be kept on a storage device, for example memory cards or a solid state disk.
Temporary storage devices like a solid state disk are generally used for slower physical systems for permanent data. This type of data is slower to access. Information which is quicker to access is usually stored on the memory of the computer. This relates to temporary state devices.
A solids state drive, also known as a solid state disk (SSD) is a storage information device which is temporary and is used to store data known as persistent data –this relates to information which would be "forgotten" by the computer, were it to lose power. Traditional hard disk drives, also known as HDD, tend to use electromechanical devices such as spinning disks. A solid state disk drive, on the other hand, does not use moving parts such as this, but instead utilizes a non volatile memory chip, or microchip.
There are many benefits to using SSD drives over standard traditional hard disk drives or HDDs. The first is that they are less likely to be destroyed due to physical shock. Secondly, they have slower latency and access time, and they are also less noisy. They are also more compact and you can use them on the same interface as a HDD or hard disk drive, enabling easier transferral between different formats.
Another method of saving information on a SSD is to use memory cards, another name of which is flash cards. Memory cards refer to electronic flash computer storage components which can be used for storing information. These are often used for electronic machines such as mobile phones, MP3 players, games consoles, digital cameras and laptops. They have multiple uses and many advantages, including the fact that as well as being very small and portable they can also be recorded over. One of the advantages can become a disadvantage however; flash cards have become smaller in size as technology has advanced, making them not only more portable but also easier to lose. In addition, they tend to generally be higher in price depending on how much information you can save to them. This type of drive also comes in the form of a USB pen drive, which can be used as a "plug and play" device.

Why would people buy Solid State drives if they suffer from wear leveling?
I read in an article that solid state drives will eventually go bad because they have limited read/write cycles. If this is the case then why would people buy these if they have lower capacities than hard disk drives and they are slower than Hard disk drives? Solid State drives tend to cost considerably more than a hard disk drive.
There are two classes of users. First, performance junkies use SSD's as a huge RAM drive. SSD's have much higher speed than traditional hard drives. Second is portable usage. they use far less power, are lighter, and are vibration and impact resistant. They last much longer in mobile laptops than do traditional hard drives. I have had numerous laptop hard drive failures, and want an SSD when I grow up!
