You need the thinnest rosin core solder you can find, Radio shack has some but you can also check at any place that sells or repairs electronics or TVs. Or online you can get it from Mouser or a number of other electronics suppliers.
Use a soldering iron with a sharp point, clean it with some sandpaper and then let it get hot. then melt some solder onto it and wipe it off on a wet rag or sponge. Clean the little diode you're soldering to, try using an eraser to polish it a little ( if you can find an old ink eraser or typewriter eraser they work well). Take the end of the wire, heat it with the iron and put the solder on there. Then put the wire in place, touch the iron to it and add a dab of solder. Pull the iron away so you don't overheat, but if you move the wire it will pop apart- it does take some practice. If you can get something to hold the wire so you don't have to it's a big help- try a clothes pin, a small alligator clamp, whatever you can find.
Good Luck!
