You must be familiar with mail slots, right? Yes, they are slots in either door or wall to give mail carriers easiness in delivering mail. You can find these slots in household or even business and office building. However, do you notice that these slots were actually used in Paris? If an Air Force base has both combat comm and base comm, is there a way to find out which the open slot is?
How can I find out if an open slot at an Air Force base for my career field is a slot for base comm or combat comm?
Hello "GC"
NO. There is no way for you to do that in the Air Force. Headquarters Air Force does not fill openings at the Air Force bases just because there is an open "slot."
Every base has "open slots" from it's authorized manning document. The Air Force doesn't man each base at 100%.
What it does is try to maintain an overall manning rate of about 85 - 90% of the authorized manning slots at all the bases.
Tapping people for the Middle East duty since 1991 means that people had to be taken away from all the bases to make up a group to send overseas during this combat period. The Congress did NOT give the Air Force increased authorizations to bring in new people. In fact, Congress took away people from the Air Force. A number of officers were eliminated. A number of first termers were given early outs to save money.
So, it is useless to know that some duty section at "X" Air Force Base has one less person assigned. Sure they do. And, so do all the other bases around the Air Force world of 70+ bases.
What is most critical in Air Force manning is to not let any base duty section's manning fall below the minimum.
Major commands are allocated people from technical schools and coming back from overseas every three months cycles. IF a Major Command needs 100 people and another Major Command needs 40 people, and if only 60 people are coming back from overseas and graduating from technical school - then, the base that needs 100 people will get, maybe 80% of those 60 people (48 people) and the Command that needs 40 people will only get 20% of those 60 people (12 people). Then, they all have to waif another 3 months for the next assignment selections.
So. You can not find out because the information is not available and would be useless anyway. You have to go where you are sent.
Now, to help you, the only thing you have going for you is to fill out the AF Form 392 Airman Assignment Preference Statement. In the 8 choices for CONUS bases you need to list as #1 choice the base name of where you would like to go if you could send yourself there. Then, for options #2 - #8 list the states where you would like to be sent. Then, for overseas, list the 8 country names you wish to go to. IF you want to volunteer for overseas then put an "X" in the Volunteer "YES" box.
Then, the computer will do the rest. Every 3 months you name and everyone else in the Air Force are screened for possible assignment.
Remember, if you have 4 years in and just reenlisted: Always volunteer to go overseas. That's where the career advancement takes place!
