What Is The Servo Motor?
As a fairly popular motor within the mechanics industry, the servo motor serves a variety of purposes. Used in everything from cars and airplanes to robots, puppets, and more, servo motors are convenient in that they can be relatively small, great for use in model size applications. On the other hand, they can also be used in more heavy-duty situations, such as for powerful sailboats. The following article is an attempt to discuss what the servo motor actually is and how exactly it works.
The basic servo motor is made up of five parts. These parts are some type of position sensing device, a DC motor, a control circuit, a gear reduction unit, and an output shaft bearing.
The first part is commonly a potentiometer or some type of position-sensing device. This device allows for the monitoring of the current angle of the servo motor. The signals produced then allow the DC motor to turn so that its shaft is in the appropriate position. The next two parts, a control circuit and a gear reduction unit can then combine to work together with the sensing device and the DC motor so that the servo motor receives control signals, allowing for the desired output into the fifth part: the servo shaft.
The other thing we need to know about the servo motor relates to its wire connections. The servo motor has three wire connections, each connecting to a different source and ultimately combining to allow the servo motor to work. The first wire connects to a power source, the second wire connects to the ground, and the third wire connects to the control.
It is also important to remember that the power applied to the motor is directly proportional to the distance that the motor needs to travel. For example, if the shaft has a long distance that it must travel, the motor will run at a faster speed. The servo motor will run at a slower speed if the distance is much smaller. In the industry, this is often referred to as proportional control.
One of the most popular things about servo motors is their flexibility. Because there is no one type of servo motor, servo motors can be designed and produced for almost any occasion. Many different variations of the basic servo motor design can affect the output of the servo motor, making it more productive for the desired application.

now in detail of that video. lets start with the potentiometer. it acts as a voltage divider, giving the angle of the servo arm to the controller. the controller will then analyze it, and compare it with the pulsed signal from the control line. the pulse width determines the angle, typically from 0 to 180 degrees. the controller will then rotate the DC motor in the appropriate direction until the potentiometer is in the correct position, aka the servo arm is correctly placed. the servo speed/torque is determined by the gearing ratio set up over the motor.
