Miniature Accessories: Easing the Operation of Rotary Tool
Rotary tool is a powerful tool used for various functions such as grooving, cutting, drilling, glazing, shaping, etching, engraving, polishing, sharpening etc. It comes with a rotary tip that accepts variety of attachment and miniature accessories for performing different task. For carving edges and grooves, a router base accessory is attached that turns a rotary tool into a portable router. Calculating Required Torque?
I am building a table that has a rotating top (industrial use). The top is virtually solid, 20" in diameter and 1/2" thick cast aluminum. I want to know what force I need from a rotary actuator to turn the top 90 degrees in a few seconds (3 sec max). How do I find this? Links to calculators would be nice. Thank you!
Really need more information ... but I'll guess:
Is the rotary actuator applied at the edge -- so the force has a lever arm of 10"? I guess yes.
Do you want the top to stop after 90 degrees of rotation? I guess yes.
So it needs to accelerate at alpha for 1.5 s and decelerate at -alpha for 1.5 s.
Convert to SI:
radius = 10" * 2.54 cm/" * 1 m/100 cm = .254 m
thickness = 0.5" 2.54 cm/" * 1 m/100 cm = .127 m
Volume:
thickness*pi*r^2 = 0.00257 m^3
Mass:
0.00257 m^3 * density = 0.00257 m^3 * 2.70*10^3 kg/m^3 = 6.95 kg
Rotational Inertia:
I = M*R^2 / 2 = 6.95 kg*(.254 m)^2 / 2 = 0.224 kg.m^2
Alpha for 45 degrees in 1.5 s, from rest:
theta = (1/2)*alpha*t^2
45 degrees * 2*pi radians/180 degrees = (1/2)*alpha*(1.5 s)^2
alpha = 2*45 degrees * 2*pi radians/180 degrees * (1/(1.5 s)^2 = 1.396 radians/s^2

T = 0.313 Newton.meters
Force applied at edge of disk;

I suppose you would prefer the force in pounds:
1.23 N * 0.2248 lbs / N = 0.277 lbs
