Does anyone know of the long term effects of Oak poisoning in a horse?
I bought a little welsh section a colt on Thursday from the sales ring, last night I nearly lost him and he is not out of the woods yet. The vet says he has been poisoned by eating large quantities of oak or bracken. He is weeing blood and is very poorly. It is a case of waiting to see if he pulls through now. Just wonderiing if anyone else has had experience with this problem and also if their horse survived has it caused any long term effects? Any info would be so greatfully received. Many thanks.
You're NOT going to want to hear this, BUT... Oak wood, acorns and oak leaves attack the liver and kidneys. Acorns are additcting to horses to make matters worse.
I sent TWO horses out on a use lease not realizing that the gal I leased the to didn't have a clue how to not only feed my horses but care for them generally. (Too many years of doing drugs.). It's a LONG story, but we grew up working at ranches together as teenagers.
Anway, my beloved 17 yr old TB gelding was FINE on Sat., January 9th, 1999. I was talking to my then friend, on the phone that day as he and my then 9 year old AQHA gelding were turned out together, playing. The next day, Sun., January 10th, 1999, I got a call from her boyfriend that Lil San (The TB) had just been shot (By the BF). He'd started going into convulsions, they tried to load him into a horsetrailer and he just FELL over and they couldn't get him up. Instead of calling a vet (They supposedly were going to haul him to UC Davis.), they SHOT him!
To make a long story short, it took me 3 more years to get my QH gelding back but it was already too late. Instead of the big bodied gelding I'd sent up there in '97, I got a skinny horse who looked like the former image of the 8 yr old I'd sent up. The blood work the vet in Agua Dulce did on him said that his kidneys and liver were shutting down. That he'd have good days, then one day he'd start throwing himself against the stall walls in dire pain as thing finally shut down.
January 22nd, 2003 the bad day came. I brought him into this world and at least for him, I could be there when the vet took him out of it.
For your little pony's time left, you can do what we did. Make his life easy, give him plenty of good feed and be there when the time comes.
I'm sorry for your problem and eventual loss, but by posting your question and my posting this answer, maybe we can make folks aware of the problems that having oak trees and horses together can cause.
