Heating Element Design

1. Electric power

When our engineers design the industrial furnace, they want to accelerate the rate and efficient of heating. But before we decide the gross power we have to take all respects into consideration, such as the area of the chamber of furnace, furnace construction, productivity of furnace and so on. If the electric power is too low, there will be a big temperature difference between heating element and furnace. So the service life of heating element will be shortened. While the electric power is too high, it may cost much time to reach certain temperature and productivity will be affected.

2.Surface loading of heating element

Surface loading (W) is the electric power per unit surface. W is higher, more heat will be bring out thus less material will be used. But if surface loading is too much higher, the service life will be affected and even been oxidized or melted.

Surface Area Loading is the electric power per unit surface area. The suitable surface loading is related with the material, size, structure , working temperature, abstraction of heat. While there is a difference on surface loading between industrial furnace and home appliance, so we can not define a general value.

To make our clients much easier to design their industrial furnace, NiWire Industries engineer here attach the below figure shows the relation between furnace temperature and element surface loading. This our research from many years' experience, including FeCrAl 0Cr23Al5, 0Cr25Al5 and NiChrome 80/20 and NiChrome 60/15.

 

Usually strip heating elements has a higher surface loading than wire heating elements.

Electric heating appliance no matter for industry or home, there are three kinds of methods to install the resistance heating wire. First is "embedded". The heating element is embedded in insulation materials. The heating element can not be moved or out of shape, and can not be easily oxidized neither. The surface loading will be 1-80W/cm2 under this situation. Second is "supporting". The heating coil is put on the surface or groove of fire proof material. The heating element can be stretched and distorted in shape. At this environment, its surface loading is 1-10 W/cm2. The third method is "hanging". The heating element is hanging between insulation supporting place. The heating element can be out of shape because of its own weight. The surface loading is 3-15 W/cm2.

If the conductance of a wire is doubled from 628 mS, what is the final resistance of the wire?

I need to answer this in kW. I'm thinking i need more information to answer this question but thats all im given. Any help would be great

No you don't need any more information and no the answer will not be in kW. The question is looking for resistance, so you final unit must be ohms.

If the conductance is doubled to 628 * 2 = 1256 mS

Then the resistance would be 1 over the conductance so 1 / 1256 mS = 0.796 Ohms
