The Laptop AC Adapter Regulation Standard

Several days ago, I read one article about the regulation of the laptop keyboard distribution. Like this ze4000 Keyboard, it's ordinary QWERT layout. As I have the query for a long time. And that strikes me the new question about the laptop adapters. What is the regulation of the laptop AC adapter? How do these data make out and regulated? As this Toshiba PA3467U-1ACA AC Adapter, who make out these standards?

After searching, I found this information. And I arranged these into an article and post here. Notice that it's really technical and complex to understand. Just a small dell PA-1900-02D2 AC Adapter, is there any hidden story? After reading the following content, you will see more. At least, you know who put forward these regulations.
ATX specification is set by the Intel Company in 1995 for its motherboard and power supplier. ATX power supply specification experienced ATX 1.1, ATX 2.0, ATX 2.01, ATX 2.02, ATX 2.03 and ATX 12V phases. Currently on the market power it follows the ATX 2.03 or updated ATX 12V standard. ATX 2.03 standard is 5V or 3.3V, which is used in higher processor and graphics power to provide the required voltage directly as this Toshiba PA3283U AC Adapter. The single 12V output is mainly used in hard drives and optical devices, because it was the processor and graphics power are relatively low, so the parts no problem.

This sounds a little bit dull. Due to the development of the P4 processor, the higher power consumption requires advanced power supplier. Then this specification has improved according to this change. After that, Intel increased its processor speed, and began to turn P4 Prescott core, which greatly increase in frequency. And the power requirements increase again. So Intel in April 2003, released a new ATX 12V 1.3 specifications. In addition to further strengthening the new standard 12V power supply output capacity, in order to ensure the safety of the output lines, to avoid loss, specifically developed a single 12V output shall not exceed 240VA limit.

As the Asus X83V LCD screen, the notebook AC adapter has its regulations and standards. That is why the present adapter becomes cheaper and cheaper all round the world. There are more compatible products to pick. By the way, the online shopping is a trend, and the laptop accessory is within no exceptions.

Is this charger okay for this battery?

I've a AC to DC adapter which give output DC 15V, 533 mA.
Can I use this adapter to charge a 4.8V, 2.5 Ah Nicad battery?
Should I reduce the output voltage using one of those 3 pin regulator ICs? If so, what output voltage is desirable? How long should charging be done?

Hi marne
the best way would be to use either a 7805 or a 7905 3 pin regulator chip, they are 1 amp devices so it will only charge at just under the 533 ma so it could charge it up in about 5 hours.
but don't forget the small capacitors on the input and output to ground to stop the chip from oscillations.
