SPDIF is for sending digital audio to the receiver, so why is there 3 RCA inputs at the other end?

Why is there 3 male RCA plugs on the SPDIF when audio is only left and right? The receiver has three OUTPUTS for video not three INPUTS for audio. This makes no sense. Please help.

SPDIF is for optical or coaxial digital audio...these audio formats only require on cable rather than the traditional red and white RCA plugs
