Electronic Commerce
Internet has provided innumerable benefits with not only making the world a smaller place, in terms of communication ease but has also revolutionized the concept of carrying on business not only in the local markets but in the global market scenario. Electronic commerce or simply e-commerce is the order of the day. It can be defined as the carrying of the business activities over electronic means and systems such as the computer networks and internet. Ecommerce first came into existence in the 1970 when electronic fund transfer and electronic data interchange were introduced. Since then ecommerce has made its way into all forms of business activities like buying and selling, marketing, inventory management and transaction processing. Electronic commerce thus has its importance in the business world. But just like any other form of business, electronic commerce also has certain advantages and disadvantages. These are discussed below:
Advantages of e-commerce
1. The most important advantage of electronic commerce is that it has enabled individuals and business establishments to reach customers globally. The geographical boundaries have been diminished as business has now reached far flung areas and even small to medium business enterprises are promoting their products and services.
2. Sales and profits have increased as business can now be conducted round the clock with transactions being carried over despite holidays.
3. Customers have also been beneficial with the introduction of electronic commerce, as now they have access to the world market and they can compare prices and buy good quality products at cheaper rates. Middlemen profit can now be overcome by reaching the original manufacturers directly over the internet.
4. Online shopping has proved a boon for those that had been restricted due to time constraints or other factors. Not only does online shopping saves time, it also saves money. With comparison shopping customers can now avail the same goods at reasonable prices.
5. Business concerns are benefited by electronic commerce in the sense that they save on huge advertising and marketing costs, upkeep of employees and middlemen profits. On the other hand they can increase the customer base by using the investment saved by providing quality customer care services.
Disadvantages of e-commerce
1. The biggest disadvantage of e-commerce is that there are still some reservations regarding the security of financial transactions being carried over the internet. People vary of divulging their personal information. The authenticity and legitimacy of all the e commerce sites cannot be gauged.
2. Electronic commerce offers no business for perishable items. This is because people still like to buy these items by the conventional way. The time taken for delivery is what could make the difference. Even returning or exchanging products purchased electronically pose some problems.
However after reviewing both the advantages and disadvantages of electronic commerce, one can surely say that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. What is truly needed to expand businesses to a greater number of people is to build trust and overcome technical problems. This would surely change the present scenario and help in making electronic commerce adjust to the requirements of the people.
