So – what are the uses of USB turntable equipment?
Talk to most DJs today and you'll hear what pretty much amounts to a rant of unbridled length and enthusiasm, about the USB turntable. It's great. It's ground breaking. It's handy. It's portable. It's the future. But what actually is it? For those who don't know: a USB turntable is a record deck that plugs into a computer by means of a USB port. It uses power from the computer to run itself and the signal from the platen arm is sent straight into the PC or laptop. That's it. Simple. So what are the uses of USB turntable equipment? What, in other words, is so great about a record deck you can plug into a PC?
First up: vinyl, its protection and use. Vinyl is precious, vinyl is fragile – and vinyl is extremely heavy when you carry it around in boxes. It's also very, very valuable. Some DJs will have collections of stuff you just can't get any more – stuff that, if broken or stolen, is simply irreplaceable. Records beyond value.
What does the USB turntable do that makes all this easier? Simple. One of the primary and most obviously beneficial uses of USB turntable equipment is transferring all of that priceless vinyl onto a hard drive. The USB record deck is used as a source and the computer becomes the "tape" onto which all that source material is recorded. The DJ can then carry his or her record collection around in his or her pocket, on a hard drive or on a laptop. No more stupidly heavy, stupidly valuable vinyl being carted around from show to show in the boot of a car. The USB turntable is an active protector of the investment of all those records – keeping, if nothing else, a backup copy available at all times.
There are other, more technical uses of USB turntable equipment. For one, the USB turntable can of course be used just like any other record deck. It plays a record and it can be scratched, mixed and so on. Because the USB record deck runs into a computer, all sorts of tricksy goodness can be achieved using live mixing programmes – the kind of thing that progressive house DJs have been using for the last few years. It's basically like using an electronic music programme live in your set – so you have to be good and you have to have a thorough command of the software. If you get it right, though, the effects you can pull off are nothing short of high end pro.
Other technical uses of USB turntable equipment? Sampling direct from vinyl without destroying the record; recording practice sessions for digital playback; recording demos straight to hard drive, to be emailed to clubs and promoters; and for direct synching with computer controlled light shows or visuals. By playing a USB record deck straight into a computer running a visual display for your show or gig, you can ensure that the sights and sounds are always matched. The USB turntable makes you a virtual DJ and VJ, all rolled into one.

What is the simplest way to access serial I/O in Visual C++?
I am a former assembly programmer. I use VC++ 6 a lot, but I have used .NET 2005, and C# as well. Not everyone has migrated, so VC++ 6 is my best choice.
Also I have written USB HID I/O code in VC++ 6, but my employer is migrating to ASYNC over USB. Any suggestions on that? I am writing code to communicate with bankcard terminals.
