how many amps can a potentiometer take?
i need to dim one of my led signs and i was wondering how many amps a pot can take. the amperage of the sign is .02ma x 66=1.32a. also if i wire up resistors of the same type in series can i combine them to be a higher amp load? say i take 4 1/2watt resistors, can i make that 2 watts?
Your math (as stated) isn't correct. By ".02ma," I assume you mean 0.02 amps, or 20 milliamps (ma). So that would be 0.02a x 66 = 1.32a.
I'm not certain what LEDs you're referring to. The common ones that I've used in various circuits require about 2 volts across them (certain colors require more) and have a forward current of about 20 ma. See the link for more details on LED current and voltage.
I don't think you can "dim" an LED. They either light up when their proper voltage is applied, or they stay dark. Using a potentiometer or resistor to reduce the applied voltage would simply turn them off.
As for the last part of your question, 4 half-watt resistors would equal one 2 watt resistor if they are of equal resistance value and are connected in parallel, not series. However, doing so divides the total resistance by 4. For example, four 1000-ohm half-watt resistors in parallel would equal one 250-ohm 2-watt resistor.
