how do electronic cigarettes affect the environment?

aside from recycling issues with the plastic used for cartridges and the lithium used for batteries, how else might long-term use of electronic cigarettes impact the environment? I'm not looking for a comparison with tobacco cigarettes. instead, I'd like to hear about how human exhalation of the "vapor" may affect the concentration of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere over time, assuming we're all smoking cartridges that contain propylene glycol and nicotine, and whatever else may be inside.

thank you!

In the interests of full disclosure, I will state up front that I am not only an electronic cigarette user, but I own a web site that sells them. That said, I have done a considerable amount of research on the ingredients in an electronic cigarette as well as the politically generated controversy surrounding them.

Electronic cigarettes will affect the environment about as much as your breathing does. Propylene glycol is an emulsificant, a humectant, a binding agent and a solvent, amongst other things. It is already an ingredient in a multitude of items we use every day. It is found in food, medicine, cosmetics, toothpaste, mouthwash, perfumes, beer, wine, saline solution ... the list goes on and on.

The FDA, in its initial judgment against the approval of electronic cigarettes, cited only one thing that propylene glycol was found in, however. They chose to alarm the public and state that it is a chemical found in antifreeze! Keep in mind that the FDA receives a substantial portion of their funding from both the paharmaceutical industry and the tobacco industry - neither of which wants the electronic cigarette cutting into their market share. There is way more to this story than meets the eye but this is not the forum to discuss that.

More to the point, there are plenty of electronic (also called electric) cigarette e-liquids that do not contain ANY propylene glycol. Instead, they use vegetable glycerin as their binding agent. Vegetable glycerine is a created biproduct extracted through hydrolysis of completely natural substances - usually palm or coconut oils.

In summary, I think the "fumes" from an electronic cigarette are about as innocuous as something can get. I'm all for saving the environment but can we start with saving people's lives first? That's why the elctronic cigarette was invented!
