On a Dell XPS power cord, about how many centimeters does the copper pin extend from the base of the adapter?
I ask this because I am not quite sure if my problem is my AC adapter or the internal port jack.

most common problem is the internal port jack breaking a solder connection.
The copper pin on the base of the adapter would be on the AC input side and most adapters have a power LED on them. If the LED is on then he adapter is powered.
If u have a voltmeter and a couple of paper clips u can measure the voltage at the plug end of the DC cable. careful not to short them out.
