Can I change the com port number on my laptop?

I want to use a old fluke oscilloscope with software fluke view 3.0, the communication cable uses a RS-232 port, my laptop doesn't have this kind of port, I have a usb to RS-232 adapter, my computer recognized the adapter but assigned a port 5,6,7 or 8. the problem is that the software only use ports 1 to 4 and can not connect with my oscilloscope. there is any way to change the port number? I use a Sony Vaio VGN-NS110E with vista home premium. Thank you

I do not think so those ports are a signed and if you use them your computer will crash...
