Oscilloscope Probes

What questions to a prospective oscilloscope seller on Ebay are wise questions?
I see many scopes for sale, but most say "it comes on" when powered. or "it needs calibartion" , or it has no probes or power chords.................
I dont know how to calibrate, and doubt I could find a power chord for a particular model scope. What im afraid of is purchasing a scope with missing items which may render it unusable, inaccurate, or undesireable. I can deal with dents and scratches, and know I can purchase probes for around $40 +-. Hardly any offer much assurance of being ready to use for the price. I think I am settled now on a Techtronics 100 MHZ dual trace Analog scope
and while I want to buy reasonable I want to buy wisely.
Assuming I know what kind of scope I want, I am asking for ADVICE on what I need to consider from an ebay/or used seller to ensure I have a useable and as advertised scope.
You should be afraid.
If you are buying a scope sight unseen you are going to want to know that it actually works. No probes or no power cord is not a problem, as long as the seller has probes and a power cord and has verified the scope works.
Needs calibration may mean "it didn't work for me".
It comes on may mean that a light turns on.
Buying from a reputable seller who has stuff like that in their history and makes assurances it works will increase your chances of getting a functional unit. If you are looking to save money, you might be better off getting one locally - even if it costs more. Check craigslist, pawn shops or local school auctions.
