Silicone Gel Breast Implants - Pros And Cons
Silicone gel implants are still the most popular implants used for breast augmentation surgeries in America. This differs in the rest of the world, but in the US there are currently only two breast implants approved for cosmetic use by the FDA.
Silicone gel implants consist of a silicone shell filled with silicone get. The filler to the implants is called a gel and while it is not a true liquid, it is not a sold mass, either. It was invented by Cronin and Gerow, plastic surgeons who made them commercially available in 1962.
Early in testing, the results were not completely successful, and the resulting controversy surrounded the implants. There was a time when the study of silicone implants on rats suggested the gel might be carcinogenic. Later, however, a committee of carcinogenicity ruled out the case, as it only pertained to tested animals.
In the late 1980s and the early 1990s, breast augmentation became suddenly very popular, with the silicone gel implant winning the race for popularity. By 1992, due to the many horror stories resulting from silicone gel implants, the FDA made a decision concerning their use. The FDA decided that the study of the medical risks associated with using silicone gel implants was their responsibility and removed the product from the market for all elective surgeries with the single exception of reconstructive surgeries.
For fourteen years, the FDA launched an intense scrutiny of silicone gel implants, testing and improving them. Then in 1997, a study dedicated to the complications of silicone gel implants was presented. The main problem with silicone implants was determined to be the toxic effects of silicone gel leakage. This fundamental problem was solved by changing the material of the outer shell, which was originally polyurethane foam which showed signs of degradation. By changing the outer shell, manufacturers solved another issue related to the implants, capsular contracture or excessive scarring around the implant site.
Finally, in 2006, the FDA gave their unqualified approval of silicone gel breast implants and approved the unrestricted usage of them in America. Due to their intense scrutiny, silicone gel implants are the most studied medical device in the world. After decades of research and tests surrounding the breast augmentation procedure, coupled with the FDA's research into silicone gel implants, the result is a green light on its usage.
It is important to remember that no surgery is without risk, including breast augmentation surgery with silicone gel implants. Even so, the silicone gel implant has been established as a safe product. Decades of study have provided those looking into breast augmentation with the historical data necessary to sustain the credibility of silicone gel implants. Now, implants that are known to look and feel more like real breasts than their saline implants are available to American women.
If you would like to learn more about silicone gel implants, it is helpful to search the internet for more information. Please remember, however, that any information you find may be out-of-date or inaccurate. It is helpful to use the information gathered in this way as a basis to write a list of questions to be taken to an expert. The best choice of expert in this field would be a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast augmentation. Generally, initial consultations with plastic surgeons are free. It is the surgeon's job to educate you on the surgical procedure and the implants used to make certain you have realistic expectations and receive positive results from your procedure.
