Mini Optical Light Source Features Stable Output Power

Toronto, Canada – GAO Fiber Optics (www.GAOFiberOptics.com) recommends its mini optical light source featuring highly stable and accurate output power and wavelength. It combines high performance with durability in a handy, small-sized package. The handheld light source is specially designed for use in telecommunication and CATV testing and maintenance as well as for use with fiber optics systems. It is available for both single-mode fiber and for multi-mode fibers. GAO Fiber Optics' mini optical light source, model 08221, utilizes an FP-LD emitter and operates over the wavelength range of 1330nm to 1550nm. It is light in weight, easy-to-use and cost-effective. It includes an optional loss test kit. When used in conjunction with 08112 mini optical power meter, the optical light source provides an efficient testing solution for field work in fiber optic networks. The mini light source works continuously for forty hours using three 1.5V alkaline batteries.

How does a technician test a Circuit Board , when there are so many tests available?

How does a technician test a Circuit board when there are a lot of tests out there for PC BOARDS ?
Namely
a) bare-board test
b) Bed of nails test
3) visual inspection & Automated Optical Inspection
4) In circuit Test
5) Functional Test
and
6) boundary scan testing

How would one go about deciding which one to use at a particular instant or does it all have to be used oen time or the other Interchangeably ?

It depends on the situation. As to bare boards its best to buy an electrical test from who ever fabricates the board. The board house will have the netlist used to create the bare PC board and can do a complete continuity and short test pretty quick on the bare board. After that it can go to the fab house and be stuffed (have the components installed/soldered onto it). If the production levels are high enough to warrant the time to program something like a big Genrad / bed of nails Test Station then this is the quickest way to check and exercise everything on the board. If it is low volume or custom work then hooking the board up on a test bench and checking each circuit function may be the most direct route. If an electrical test was done at the fab house and QA passes the incoming board assembly then there may be enough confidence in it to simply install it, turn it on and activate each function to see if they all work (functional check). If these were boards returned on an RMA from the field then they likely came with a specific complaint like such and such doesn't work in which case you can focus on the part of the circuit that would affect that operation being complained about. In circuit tests are appropriate where the entire product is assembled and there is a problem that needs to be tracked down. It is also useful for things like debug and final calibration etc. These are just examples... the possibilities are so broad its not really possible to say.. this test is only used for this... its just not that way. I will say that the use of lower skilled labor has become more common place which would seem to make ATE (Automated Test Equipment... like bed of nails) more useful but what I actually see is they turn the lower skilled guys lose and what they cant fix some guy in the back with 30 years of experience takes care of it. When that last guy gets it its all in circuit and usually with good test equipment as well. Worst of the worse is they call engineering and some engineer has to drop what he is doing which is likely already overdue and go over there and fix it for them. Hope that helps. Good luck.
