What is the advantage of optical CT over conventional CT in preventing power theft?
Usually optical CTs are not applied for the primary purpose of preventing power theft.
However, optical CTs, Rogowski coils, and other types of linear current sensors usually have a very wide sensing range, and do not saturate like conventional CTs.
One possible form of power theft could involve very high load currents that cause a mis-applied conventional CT to saturate, thereby losing its metering accuracy.
Optical CTs in particular are usually applied in EHV applications, inside power substations, where power theft is less likely to be a concern. In LV and MV distribution, where power theft is more common, I would be inclined to use a Rogowski coil, since they are some much simpler, cheaper, and more reliable than an optical CT.
