Advantages of optical fiber
Optical fiber Advantages:
The use of optical fiber in communication has revolutionised the communication technology in the last decade. In broadcasting too, the use of optical fiber has become a reality. Today's convergent world where communication, computers and broadcasting are merging, the knowledge of optical fibre is essential. The spectrum used for optical fiber communication is in the wavelength from 0.8 micro metre to 1.7 micro metre (from 1013 to 1016 Hz). In this communication system the electrical signal is converted into light wave and is transmitted over a glass fiber, which is known as optical fiber. This has a number of advantages, which makes it one of the most modern means of communication links. The most important advantages are listed below: -
1. Enormous bandwidth: Since the frequency employed is in the visible light spectrum, the bandwidth available is enormous. A bandwidth of several Giga Hz is possible in optical fiber communication.
2. Size & Weight: Unlike metallic cables the optical fibers is very small in diameter, as small as human hair and weighs very less. Therefore many optical fibers can be put in one cable sheath.
3. Electrical Isolation: Since the glass fiber is a very good electrical insulator, like PVC, they can provide a high level of electrical isolation. This property is very helpful in broadcasting especially in High Power Transmitters. Some of the recent transmitters inducted into our network are employing optical fiber due to this property.
4. Immunity from Electrical Interference: As the mode of transmission is by light, external electromagnetic interference will not effect the reliability of optical fiber communication. Similarly cross talk which is normally associated with metallic conductors is also not present in optical communication.
5. Signal security: Optical signal will not radiate itself from the fiber. As such it is not possible to detect the information carried by the cable by proximity. This will ensure high security in optical fiber communication.
6. Attenuation and loss: The modern optical fiber gives very low attenuation of the signal and has got minimum transmission loss, as low as 0.2dB/kM. This will enable the data to be communicated over a long distance without repeater amplifiers.
7. Rugged & Flexible: Optical fibers are manufactured for very high tensile strength. Hence can be handled easily for laying and can be twisted without any damage.
8. Low Cost: With mass production of optical fibers the cost is low compared to costly copper cables for the same amount of data transmission.
