How much torque to turn an electric motor?
How can one find out how much energy/torque is required to turn the shaft of a (large) electric motor? I am guessing I am going to need a tool, but what tool? If anyone knows where information like this is available also that would help, like I dont have a motor myself to test, I am just looking for a ballpark answer for a generator design. So if someone says "the 9" dia. XXXX motor requires X Nm of torque" that would help too. Thanks.
It's not a matter of size of a generator, but rather what it produces in terms of power into a load that determines the power (and torque)required to "turn" it. RPM has to figure into it.
Power out will equal power input, less the frictional and electrical losses incurred.
So if you had a generator that generated 1000W, and it was 80% efficient, the input power required would be 1000 + (20% of 1000) = 1200W.
