Cinema 4D 12.0 Dynamics - Using a Motor
Cinema 4D 12.0 has introduced many new features in dynamics but some standouts are new dynamic 'drivers', the motor, spring, and companion connectors. When I introduce myself to new concepts and especially new ones in Cinema 4D that have a multitude of possible settings, I go with simplicity free 3d models.
In the case of a new dynamic that 'does something', I build something with the fewest moving parts and relationships that illustrates how this 'new thing' works, then add complexity and greater application later.
In the case of the motor, you do need to have at the very least a motor, an object, and a connector, to connect the motor to the object. However you can have a simplistic motor that does little more than entertain and demonstrate its simplest application because this is our world of animation. Your objects don't have to be practical or useful; in this case we simply want to see them work.
I've seen two basic constructs that illustrate a 'bare bones' motor dynamic and one is simply two wheels and an axis. The other is different combinations of a sphere and bounding 'hoop' that have a motor, connector relationship free 3d models. The later simply scoots around on the terrain like a space crawler. It is very simple to build though so let's step through our space trawler.
Create a new file. Create a 'floor' for your dynamic objects. You will always need something for your objects to roll on, land on, or sit upon because once you make an object 'dynamic', it will fall into an abyss if there isn't a corresponding dynamic object to hold or catch it.
I have had quirky results with different combinations of build sequences and settings for the objects so I am going to be very careful here to stick to what has been for me, the 'skeleton' build that works. Create a sphere and a torus object that will circumscribe the sphere. Under 'Simulation->Dynamics' choose 'Create Rigid Body', assign a rigid body tag to your sphere and torus. Change the torus rigid body shape setting to 'Moving Mesh'.
Now highlight your floor, Under 'Simulation->Dynamics' choose 'Create Collider'. These are all the dynamic assignments you need to make and choosing 'Moving Mesh' for the shape type for your torus object is the only non-default setting you will choose. I stress this because when my builds produced mixed results and I experimented with many settings, I wanted to be certain which ones really made the difference, which ones really were the bare minimum definition to produce a motor driven object free 3d models.
Under 'Simulation-Dynamics' choose 'Motor' then 'Connector'. These are all the objects you will need. Under both motor and connector there is an object 'A' and 'B' field. Enter the sphere and torus. I have reversed the order and it still works but pushed the object set in the opposite direction.
I encountered two 'gotchas'. The first was that when you create a sphere and floor, the sphere is not on top of the floor; half is below. As I tried different settings I inadvertently raised the sphere above the floor. If it is below, your build will not go anywhere (it might bounce around). If it is above, it will bounce and ricochet. As dynamics play on one another, the object's size and what might be considered weight come into play and when you get wacky results this is a 'first thing' to check.
The other is that the position of the motor and connector need to be both aligned and centered on your object(s). Both the motor and connector have a display tab that has an 'always visible' check box and a draw size setting. I've found it helpful to choose 'always visible' to see the motor and connector and to increase the draw size a bit to make them stand out more. With these options it is easy to see right away whether or not your motor and connector are aligned and centered on your object.
That's it. With these assignments and check points, push play and you will see your little moon trawler scoot across the stage.
When I review this article it seems like a lot to keep up with but it is easy to miss one thing and get very mixed results. Here we have two objects, sphere and torus. They are assigned to be rigid objects as is the floor (a 'collider' object).
We create a motor and connector which in turn are linked to the two objects on our stage. Once you are confident of this simplest build sequence and expected results, it is time to have more fun as we move on to more complex dynamics.
