5x+21=31
5x=10
x=2
Now you need to find what y is by substituting x into one of the original equations.
y=2+7

For the second one, you have to make one of the equations so that either the p or the q is isolated on one side. In this case, the first equation might be easier to isolate, so you would make it
p=4-q
Now you do the same thing with the first problem.
4(4-q)+q=1
16-4q+q=1

q=5
Do the same thing by substituting to find the other value:
p+5=4
