If I have a switch, battery and a LED how do I hook those up so when the switch is off the LED is off?
The switch has two posts. I belive the way you hook a switch up is use negative or positive on one post and the other post connects to the object you are trying to power. So would the LED have one post connected directly to the battery while the other is connected to the switch while the switch is connected to the battery? And would that still drain the battery while it is in the off position?
Well, first, you are going to need a resistor in this circuit of yours.
Secondly, if the switch is a SPST as it sounds, it makes no difference how it is connected.

Literally, all you have to do is connect everything in series. If you can do that, there is no wrong way to connect it... but you are going to need to limit the current and since you told me nothing about the battery, you've made it impossible for me to figure it out for you.
