Marine Use for LED Lights
I have been monitoring our power usage aboard our vessel as we anchored out on our yacht in recent times and was surprised to discover just what power a standard incandescent bulb utilizes. Our anchor light pulled two amps while lit pulling a total of eighteen amp hours on any given night. The Edison bulb that has lit up our vessels since 1879 is formally on its last leg. The inefficient incandescent, which loses almost all of its power as heat, has fallen in unpopularity. By the early part of 2012, American residents will not be able to purchase one even if they wanted to. The government is planning to prohibit their manufacture to save power.
The chief replacement for the incandescent light bulb is the higher-efficiency fluorescent light bulb. The fluorescent, however, has its own problems, mainly the existence of deadly mercury in the design and a bizarre tint that a good number of individuals find objectionable. Now comes the LED, or light-emitting diode. LEDs have been available for a lot of years. A good number of drawbacks have kept companies from making them in standard, replacement-size bulbs, mainly the price to the consumer. However in the last few years, these LED replacement bulbs have become a great deal more widespread and costs have dropped.
How to define LED Illumination?
LED stands for "light-emitting diode." LED lights are incredibly minute semiconductor diodes that are capable of generating illumination. The illumination that is created by any given LED can be of a variety of colors. The tint of the illumination that is created by an LED light is dependent on the substance that is used to make the semiconductor. A average incandescent bulb lasts approximately 750 hours; an LED lasts 30,000 hours and a few LED bulbs last up to 50,000 hours.
I pointed out that my masthead light pulled 18 amp hours when lit up while at anchor. I replaced the bulbs with 2 LEDs that drew barely .001 amps each. The grand total of energy utilization changed from 18 amp hours to .018 amp hours. Now that is a sizeable saving and the reality that I can replace those amp hours from the sun, makes it even better!
Cost Factors
Despite the duration benefit, things get more confusing when you get into the price matter. A 60-watt LED replacement light bulb runs in the neighborhood of $100, and even the lower-output variations, used for equipment like mast lights, will cost between $30 and $40. That's in comparison to a $1 incandescent bulb. But the actuality is, even at elevated rates for a single light bulb, LEDs will wind up saving money in the long term, because you only need one for the life of your trawler and you spend a lesser amount of cash on replacement bulbs. But the initial cost is nevertheless pretty high for now. In short, replacing the average bulbs on your yacht with LED light bulbs may be a smart expenditure if your primary concern is power usage.

Why don't they have discrete LED lights in the frames of glasses, to allow you to read in the dark?
It would be so easy to build them into the frame of the glasses, and have very thin batteries in the frame too. Press a button and it gives you a little glimmer of light forward to illuminate a dark notice or see the latch on a gate. Solar chargeable.
Sounds like a little research to make the light not so heavy is all you need before you can get a patent and put out a product. That is a really wonderful idea. It could be the next infomercial phenomenon.
