gift for electrician?
I need to find a gift for a person who will be finished with electrical school this year. I would like to get him a start on some tools...I heard Klein was a good brand. I'm of course on a budget, and these things get pricy. Does anyone know a few of "electrician must have's", or what is really important to start out with? Thanks!!!
klein is over rated. the only kleins i own are diagonal pliers and journeymen linesmens. i would say get all the tools from craftsmen as they're affordable quality. they also have the best warranty ever, just bring the broken tool, no questions asked, its replaced. all the electricians i know go with craftsmen or whatever they can afford. after all, if you have the best tools on the site, they are apt to become someone elses. a good kit for an apprentice would include, Diagonal Cutting Pliers(klein), linesman pliers(klein) screwdriver set(craftsmen) wire strippers(nice ones are the Ideal 45-918 Kinetic Reflex Super T-Stripper, the klein ones are terrible) channelocks, utility knife, and a 10" crescent wrench. a basic greenlee digital multimeter is good for a starter also. as he is in the field for a while, he will know when to get quality, and when to get cheap tools. also if you ever buy a cordless drill, get the makita lct200w kit, its the best quality drill and value out there. i use the impact driver alot. if you are on a budget, i say get all craftsmen. and yes, they are all made in usa! the handtools, anyway.

~please for the love of god, don't buy the first 2 tools David suggested! especially that wire stripper! its bulky and impractical. cable cutters are expensive and the contractor will usually provide a ratcheting drill powered cable cutter. those ones on ebay look pretty worn, even if they are kleins. i say wait for the employer to give a required tool list before buying them.
