ok the matter is that i usually used HI300. but this time i got an equivalent : 310 H64. (i cannot get a datasheet for this).
HI300 is sensitive to the north pole on its branded side.
i made the usual connections but the IC does not recognize the north pole on its branded side. Instead, there is a steady flow of current even when there is no magnet in its neighborhood. To add to my confusion, on the other side of the IC there is a 'N' symbol.
I just want to know if this 'N' symbol signifies anything. Is this the side sensitive to north pole?
You should really ask the person who told you that the 310 H64 is a direct replacement to the HI300.
I know the HI 300, but never heard (nor find in the web) any reference for the 310 H64.
I don't think the "North Pole" is the issue, hall sensors react to a magnetic FIELD, not to a POLE. As long as you wiggle the magnet around the IC's face, you should get a reading.
I believe the issue is that, besides the hall sensor itself, there is also some electronics, at least an amplifier, within such an IC. There are even "latching" types, which means, once they detected a field, they switch "on" and stay that way until reset. Difference in pin configuration and/or NPN versus PNP output can also be the cause.
