Electrolytic Capacitor Failure - What Causes Failure of Circuit Board Capacitors?
A rise in ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) over time causes capacitor failure. An ideal capacitor has an ESR value close to zero, but with corrosion and drying, the value starts going up.
This leads to voltage drops, increased heat and eventual failure of the capacitor and other circuit board parts. To prevent capacitor failure, check it with an ESR meter.
