What are the types of braking available to the engineer?
I'm still not clear on the different types of braking available to an engineer on a diesel-electric locomotive. I understand that there are air-powered train brakes that slow the entire train, and dynamic brakes that slow the locomotive (and thus the train), but I'm not clear on how they are applied. Are there other types of brakes? What do "service" and "penalty" mean in the context of braking? Is emergency braking different from simply applying the brakes at 100%?
There are train brakes,engine brakes,and dynamic brakes.A trains brakes work by removing air from the brake pipe.Each car has a reservoir air tank pumped up to the same pressure as the brake pipe.When an engineer sets the brakes he removes air from the brake pipe through a valve.That makes a valve open and air flows from the tank on the car and sets the brakes.When he releases the brakes air flows back into the brake pipe.That opens the valve on the car and releases the air from the brake cylinder releasing the brakes.Then the brake pipe air starts to recharge the reservoir on the car.Til that tank is fully recharged the train brakes won't work as good as they did the first time.Engine brakes are applied by putting air into the brake cylinders on the engine with a different valve in the engine cab.Dynamic brakes change the traction motors into generators.They are varied by changing the amount of amperage in the field.As the amperage increases it makes it harder to turn the motors armature through the field causing it to slow down.A service application is any brake pipe reduction.A penalty application is one done by the safety systems on the locomotives such as the alerter timing out or an over speed tripping.An emergency application dumps the air through the brake valve at a faster rate and uses air from the emergency portion of the cars reservoir tank making the brakes apply harder.Of course how it it all works is more complicated that this,but that's basically how it works.
