Since there seems to be a little confusion, let's check the book, NEC 2008 says

210.21(B)(1) Single receptacle shall have rating not less than branch circuit.

*** I have heard contradicting interpretations by inspectors in the past, but I think they all now agree that a duplex is not a single receptacle.***

210.21(B)(3) Where connected to a branch circuit supplying two or receptacles or outlets, receptacle ratings shall conform to values listed in table 210.21(B)(3)

Circuit Rating 20 amps: Receptacle rating 15 or 20

240.4(D) Overcurrent rating for small conductors shall not exceed:
240.4(D)(3) 15 amps for 14 AWG copper
240.4(D)(4) 15 amps for 12 AWG Aluminum
