Why don't the marked values on low-energy light bulbs conform to the electrical law: power = current * voltage?
I have a bulb with the following markings: 240V, 130mA, 15W. If Power = Current x Voltage then shouldn't the power rating be 31W? All of the bulbs I have looked at have a similar discrepancy!
Because the low energy bulb isn't a pure resistive load. (The current flow is not in phase with the applied voltage.)
The apparent power is what you have calculated and is found by multiplying the (RMS) current by the (RMS) voltage.
The real power is 15W and is found by multiplying the instantaneous current against the instantaneous applied voltage and summing the results over a single cycle of the mains supply.
(The two are not the same.)
(As a domestic user of electricity you are only metered and charged for the real power you use, not the apparent power...)
