Four Advantages of Thermoelectric Wine Refrigerator

When it comes to the operating principle and system of a wine refrigerator, we often care about how dose it work and the advantages or disadvantages of different systems. There're two different refrigeration systems: compressor units and thermoelectric units. Compressor cooling system includes four fundamental parts: compressor, condenser, throttle valve and evaporator. They can heat up a refrigerant, later, after it's cooled, the heat will evaporate and the refrigerant will reduce the temperature inside. In contrast, thermoelectric cooling systems are solid state semiconductor devices without moving parts, fluids, chlorofluorocarbons or other chemicals, in the cooling system of thermoelectric wine refrigerator, thermocouples (also called Peltier modules) are used. Modules include two different semiconductors between two ceramic plates, it can driving heat from one surface to the other and cooling the air inside the appliance.

From technical explanation, thermoelectric wine refrigerator maybe more advanced than compressor-based one. In particular, there're four advantages.

1. Environmentally friendly

Thermoelectric wine refrigerator don't contain cooling agents like chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbon that are harmful to our ozone layer. It produces heat which circulates and then is condensed and cooled. In this way, the refrigeration systems can always keep cold. So, we can say it is environmentally friendly.

2. Fewer vibrations

It's been said that if a wine bottle is shaken, the quality of the wine will be affected, because vibration disturbs the solid particles in wines and flavor will be changed. Thermoelectric wine refrigerator is not work with a traditional compressor, so, it will result in fewer vibrations. A quiet environment is important for your wines in the long run.

3. Won't take up a lot of space

Generally, thermoelectric wine refrigerator is a compact appliance, it won't take up a lot of space, so, there's no need to worry about your limited space, you can put it at where you like.

4. Energy saving

The last advantage of thermoelectric wine refrigerator is that they use less electricity during their operation. So, it will help you to save a lot of money on energy cost every year.

How does the Peltier cooler work?

For a project, i have to design something new that would make life easier, so i decided to make an external cooler for an xbox 360. Can someone explainhow the Peltier cooler works?

Peltier Chips (in regular operation) work in the opposite way that a thermocouple* does. The chips are made of two conductors. When voltage is applied to them, they draw (A BUNCH) of current. One side of the chip can get VERY hot, while the other side will get VERY cold. Peltier chips are known as "Heat Pumps." Obviously, that means they pump heat. They don't 'create' cold (that's impossible**). They just pump heat away from the 'cold' side, and dissipate it on the other side (with a heat sink). They are very useful in cooling computer processors. You can also use them to make a pump-less refrigerator.

A Peltier Chip can operate as a generator (or sort). If one side of the chip is heated while the other side is kept cold, it will generate electricity. This is a very inefficient way of getting your electricity, but it works.

I personally have one rated at 545W. It pulls 32A @ 16VDC (I know, that's 512W). But it can handle the hot side getting up to 180°C (356°F). It needs a massive heat sink to operate.

* - Thermocouples are used in measuring temperature
** - I say this because (scientifically speaking) there is no such thing as "Cold," or "Dark." These are just words to describe situations. There is only an absence of heat, or an absence of light.
