Understanding Disc Magnets And How To Use Them
One great way to store something (and/or hold it up) is the disc magnet. As the name would imply, disc magnets are nothing more than magnets in the shape of a disc, and they are actually everywhere. We use them to hold our portfolios and binders shut when we close them, we use them like thumbtacks on magnetic bulletin boards, and most commonly, we use them just to hold things up on the refrigerator when we do not want to forget them. As some disc magnets are extremely strong, they can even be used as door catches or to straighten out a twisted cabinet door and secure it in the right place.
As mentioned, there is more than one kind of disc magnet. Actually, there are three, and each of these types has its own respective strengths and weaknesses. The most common of these (due to its cost effectiveness) is the ceramic disc magnet. This disc magnet is of medium strength and is the cheapest of three. Among ceramic magnets, the grade 5 magnet is the most common of these, but strengths of up to 10 are available (and often used for demanding technical applications). The other great thing about the ceramic disc magnet is that does not necessitate any special care or maintenance, such as surface rust protection. Usually, it is also covered with a thin film of magnetic powder.
The second type of disc magnet is the Samarium disc magnet. This magnet has a grade of 18-33 (with a grade up to 26 being the most common), making it much stronger of a magnet than its ceramic counterpart. Unfortunately, however, there is also a price to pay for this strength, as they are more expensive and also more brittle. As they are however stable at high temperatures, and like ceramics do not require any outside protection from rust, they do make a great option for any situation requiring high temperatures or an extra strong magnet.
With a grade range of 35-55, the third type of disc magnet is by far the strongest, and typically comes in 35, 40, 42, and 45 grades. These 'rare earth' or neodymium disc magnets are the most powerful commercial magnets available. As a function of their strength however, one must be very careful in using them as they can pinch fingers painfully between them if they are near each other or steel. Additionally, as they are not rust-protected, they are brittle, expensive, and temperature sensitive (no good in temperatures over 130 degrees F), they are also the highest maintenance.
With a clear understanding of each kind's respective strengths and weaknesses, disc magnets can make for a great tool for storing things, holding things out of the way, or holding them together. They have a myriad of applications in science, technology and every day life, and can be useful in a wide range of functions. As they do require varying degrees of care and precaution however, one must always take the time to do their homework and choose wisely before purchasing one.
