Miami Deep Sea Sport Fishing Charters - Light Tackle Spanish Mackerel Fishing just off the beach!
Three rods bend over as line pulls off the reels. Just inshore seagulls are diving on bait showering the surface as beach goers watch the action. Its Spanish Mackerel fishing just a few yards east of the beach off Miami Beach.
Miami Beach is known world wide to hold some of the worlds largest Spanish Mackerel. We often catch fish as big as eight to ten pounds and a few fish around 12 pounds are caught every season. Trolling the beaches with spoons and small feathers will provide constant action, but small double hooked Ballyhoo will catch some really large Mack's and a few smoker kings.
When the conditions are right we will also drift the surf line and chum with frozen ground fish & live bait. This will bring fish close to the boat where you can fish a live bait on long shank hook and or throw small buck tail jigs, white has always been a great color in 1/4 oz to one ounce. You can also anchor the boat and use the same method, this can produce great catches and lots of action!
Spanish have sharp teeth, but they are not a close together as kings so they tend to not cut you off as much. We fish line as light at 4lb and as heavy as 20lb, but 8lb line is a great match for the Mack's. 40lb leader works well and so does #2 wire tied to a #1 to 6/0 hook depending on the size of the bait, always match your hook to the bait not the target fish. Circle hooks work very well with a live or dead bait. My favorite rig for Spanish Mackerel is a 2/0 to 3/0 long shank tied directly to 8lb line. You will get cut off quite a bit, but you will get lots of bites!
Here in Florida we are allowed 10 Spanish Mackerel, but they must be at least 12 inches long. They are great eating, but are only good fresh. So take only what you need and release the rest.

How light is lightweight, marine grade concrete for boat building?
I am considering to cast myself a planing boat out of marine grade concrete - I know they use it for sailboats with displacement hulls, but would it work for a light boat, too?
What you might try doing is to cast into the concrete fillers that will make it lighter, so that it will have less weight to displace. I know that hollow glass spheres have been used (very tiny, a by-product of smelting fly-ash, oslt.)
I think you can also whip air into concrete while it is curing, then coat the finished product with a skin coat of concrete-epoxy mix or paint. If you cast in sealed air bladders (glass bottles, fused shut...? At least that way you are using recyclables) it may improve the floatation characteristics.
