Important Safety Kits for Boats

There are different kinds of safety equipments that can be installed on a houseboat. The safety features are many and a comprehensive safety kit usually consists of many such safety devices. The expenditure on safety kits is always a well thought one, because in the long run these equipments can prove themselves to be extremely useful. A list of different safety equipments is provided in this article.

The safety kits usually consist of different kinds of alarms. The various alarm systems used on a houseboat are: high water bilge alarms, engine, exhaust and generator fuel leak alarms, boat fire alarms, helmsman watch alarm system and audible and visual marine alarms. The propane alarms and the fuel alarms come with various specifications and to be sure you are using a good product, check whether the product has the authenticated CE markings on it or not.

Apart from alarms there are also different kinds of sensors and monitors. Some common monitors and sensors are, Five area systems monitor, engine temperature sensors, underwater camera and monitors and cooling water flow detectors.

Also, custom control panels and anchor light switches are part of a boat safety equipment.

In other words, to ensure safety of the boat, alarm systems and sensors should be installed in places of the boat that are susceptible of causing an accidental explosion or other damages to the boat. The safety kits pay for themselves in the long run.

There are also several other safety equipments like the automatic engine kill switches, the rescue lights, rescue laser flare, and the rechargeable air horn among others. An automatic engine kill switch is manufactured by AUTOETHER and is quite a unique product to ensure the safety of the passengers and the boat in case the sailor or any passenger on the boat falls overboard. The sensors of this automatic engine kill switch is so placed, that in case of such extreme emergencies (falling out of the boat) the engine automatically shuts down. This is a wireless motor shut-off system that also sounds an alarm to alert the operator in case a passenger falls off. The sensors of this wireless system should be placed in passenger areas and the operator areas to ensure maximum functionality.

The Eco-friendly horns are also great boat safety accessories, being particularly useful for navigation in the fog or navigation in the dark. The horns must meet USCG requirements.

You also should look for boating classifieds site that advertises directly in your local market. For example if you want to sell a boat in Florida, try advertising your boat on boats-florida.com. The rates of these sites are very competitive so you can most likely afford to advertise at more than one place maximizing your exposure to potential buyers.

How do I winterize my boat myself? What exactly needs to be done? I have an I/O 4 cylinder.?

I had it winterized at a local boat marina and felt I got robbed last year. What exactly is fogging?????

Best advise is to get a service manual from your manufacturer, and follow their winterization procedures EXACTLY. Each make and model has different procedures. If you miss a step, it could cost you an engine in the spring. If you have a Mercruiser, I have provided a link to Mercs' site on winterization.
For a 4 cyl, our marina charges $185, here's what you get:
engine oil and filter change
fuel removal, stabilization, change fuel and water separating filters.
engine fogging, if applicable
engine flush and drain, replace glycol if a closed system.
anti corrosion spray on all electrical connections.
Battery test.
grease all pivot points and steering.
change gear oil and pressure test gearcase.
visual inspection of all wiring, hoses, belts, bellows, etc.
and some other little things (that's why we use a checklist).

Extras, such as freshwater systems, gray/blackwater systems, extra electronics, etc are billed extra.

Bottom line...if you are not 100% sure of your abilities, have this done by a shop. If something goes wrong, they are on the hook, not you. And you may sleep better this winter.
