I signed up to be light board director (aka computer programmer for lights) for our schools musical Beauty and the Beast. She put rehearsals for 3:30 to 10. then tuesday 7 to 10 wednesday 3:30 to 6 (that one isn't too bad) then on Saturday 10AM to 9PM Sunday 3 to 10. the next two days are from 3:45 to whenever. wednesday full dress rehearsal. Then the actual show starts. Is this normal for school plays? I signed up not really thinking I had joined the musical army now I'm all upset because I have two AP classes too. Keep in mind that I'm only a techie and the cast has rehearsals during class.
I dont think that the tech people should come in before the cast has pretty much perfected their perforamce. I mean do I really need 6 and a half hours to learn how to push a button to control lights. Mostly likely not...

Monday through Wednesday tech rehearsal with a Thursday opening? That is completely normal in an Educational Theatre (e.g. High School or Community College) environment. Bring water and snacks. You may be there for a while.

The (very) few days before a Thursday opening are marked by increasing agitation on the part of the Director, Choreographer, Music Director, and Stage Manager. Everyone is in a panic, including (especially, sheesh) the actors. Oh! The Drama!

It can be quite amusing.

As an LBO, if you have YOUR ducks in a row, my advice would be to sit back on a comfy pillow, press the GO button when you are cued, and watch the hijinks. Final Dress can be especially humorous.

You do need at least 6.5 hours learn WHEN to push a GO button. That one takes some finesse. Timing is everything. Timing can be taught, but it is more felt than learned.

The goal of Tech is to be invisible to the audience. This takes practice, dedication to the craft, and exquisite timing.
