Shift Work Sleep Disorder: The Effects of Shift Work on One's Health
Modern society calls for round the clock operations. People are required for this to happen. That being so demands more and more people to work in shifts. Anything outside the regular nine to six schedule is considered shift work. As the number of people working in shifts grows, more people are also at risk of suffering from shift work sleep disorder.
Shift work and SWSD
Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), a type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder, can be seen as modern society's curse along with the other lifestyle diseases. People's way of life has changed over time. It is evident in the many fast food chains all over cities.
SWSD is something many have to live with. Shift work used to be practiced in the manufacturing industry. Currently, it is a common practice in almost every industry. That being said, the current situation also does not help. Jobs are a bit harder to find and many are forced to work in shifting schedules.
People who do not adjust to work schedule changes get shift work sleep disorder. It is a type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder. Its symptoms include insomnia and other lack of sleep symptoms. These include symptoms such as headaches, difficulty concentrating, excessive sleepiness, impaired functioning and depressed mood.
Health risks
Prolonged periods of working in shifts and insomnia have dire consequences. Studies have shown that shift work as is has serious health effects.
The Centers for Disease Control says that digestive problems are frequently suffered by shift workers. These digestive problems include ulcers, constipation and other stomach problems. Digestion does follow the circadian rhythm.
Harvard and Brigham's Women's Hospital in Boston's study showed diabetes and obesity to be additional effects. Three out of eight shift workers began to show insulin resistance and an increase in blood sugar. The calorie burning hormone called Leptin is also affected. It has been observed that it decreased in its effectiveness on shift workers.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified shift work as a possible carcinogen in 2007. Shift work interrupts the body's natural light-and-dark cycle. The hormone melatonin is only produced at night when people supposedly sleep. Its production is suppressed with shift work or irregular work schedules. Melatonin is responsible for sleep and is believed to prevent tumor development. Experimental studies further support this. It is observed that reducing melatonin levels at night increases incidence or growth of tumors.
Sleep right
These are the effects of shift work on one's health. Many may know about it, but they might not have a choice. Regardless, everyone needs to sleep. Not doing so will just make things even worse.
In the long run, sleep deprivation takes its toll and the health risks are numerous. That being the case, people who work in shifts should make sure that they get enough sleep. There may not be a way around SWSD just yet. Nevertheless, employers are trying to take precautions. No employer wants underperforming and sleep deprived workers. A lot are more conscious about their workers' health.
