Artificial Electronic Knee Joint

Recently I visited CSIR technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India.  In this technofest, I have seen a technology  "Artificial Electronic Knee Joint" which was developed by CSIO (Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh) under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi, India.

Now-a-days, with increase in accidents and machine calamities (in factories), people have lower limp amputations and they need some kind of prosthesis like artificial knee joint.  Low cost prosthesis are not able to perform the coordinated and complex knee movements.  The cost is around Rs.18-20 lakhs ($45000) and people are not able to afford this cost.   Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh has developed much low cost prosthesis called ‘ Artificial Electronic Knee Joint' for people requirements.  Electronic knee joint is an intelligent prosthetic device for Transfemoral (above knee) amputees including those having bilateral limb deficiencies or hip disarticulation amputations.  The device assists persons involved in activities requiring a high level of stance stability.

The technology describes this low cost electro – pneumatic knee by integration of indigenously developed electro goniometer and force resistive sensor (FRS) in order to control swing phase dynamically.

Electro gonoimeter was experimented on individuals to achieve a suitable calibration factor.  It was observed that there was a considerable change in knee flexion angle range with walking speed.   Sensors are employed to measure the walking phase and walking speed of patient wearing prosthesis.  There are some parts like pneumatic cylinder, stepped motor, needle valve, controller PCB, battery in this electronic knee joint.

Battery: Rechargeable Lithium pack
