Play Wherever You Go With Portable Guitar Amps
Portable guitar amps make it possible to play when you travel, at a friend's house, or even at a gig. They aren't all create equally though, which means there is a lot to think about before choosing which guitar amps you want to invest in. While you can get the job done with any kind of amp, for quality sound you'll want to do a little shopping around.
However, if you've never shopped for portable guitar amps before, you might be stumped as to what criteria you should use when you're comparing the different options you find on the market. Make it easy on yourself and keep the following aspects in mind when you shop. You'll have an awesome amp in your hands in no time!
The Wattage
You don't need to find an amp that has tons of wattage. After all, this is an amp that's going to be used to play when you're on the road or when there isn't another option available. With that said, you want the sound to be crisp and pleasant, not distorted with too much bass for the little thing to handle.
The Speaker Size
You want something that is really easy to lug around with you. You want something big enough to produce nice sound, but something small enough to shove behind your seat in the car. One great way to accomplish this is to make sure you don't go smaller than four inches, or larger than eight inches. This is enough o produce the sounds you're looking for without taking up a lot of room.
The Tone
The tone of small portable guitar amps is one of the most important aspects to think about. This is what really delivers the sound of the music you play. You won't find a replacement for the tone of your amp so if it's not good you'll never be satisfied with the sound that comes out of it.
The Brand
The truth of the matter is that the brand doesn't matter nearly as much as the quality and specifications of the portable guitar amps themselves. You don't have to invest in an expensive brand name to get the style, size, and sound that you are looking for. It is more important to look at the actual features of the guitar amps you are interested in, so that you can make an informed decision as to whether it's worth your investment.

GUITAR AMPS. How big of an amp would I need to play a bar or small club?
Also, can you just run any size amp througha P.A.? Do the singers voice and the guitar have to go through different P.A.'s?
A combo amp with a single 12 in speaker or twin 12 in speakers would work wonderfully for a bar or small club. I suggest the Line 6 Spider III 112 for a solid state combo amp, or a peavey classic 30 for a tube amp for your situation depending on your tone expectations. The vocals would need to go through a seperate PA system though to get a good sound, as putting them through the guitar amp would not yield even a decent result. I recommend one of the Behringer PA system packages available at www.musiciansfriend.com. So basically use at least one 12 inch speaker for the guitar and a seperate PA for the vocals.
